Let us agree on one thing, Living room is the place where visitors to your house come first. Probably 90% percent of visitors might not enter your house beyond living room.

Living room gives first impression of your house. It gives impression of the people staying in the house. Your standard of living, way of thinking, your wealth and your choice of style everything about you will be judged here by the visitor. If the living room is filled with positive atmosphere visitor will be optimistic towards you. To get that first start you need to make it right. All in all you will agree on importance of living room in your house.

Let us make a list of important things in living room. The most important thing will top the list and the least important will be at the bottom of the list. Least important does not mean we will ignore it. While planning living room we shall consider ease of movement in the room as well as distance from the television etc. List is given in that accordance. Though painting and art effects will come at last but they have the most aesthetic value.

Seating arrangement
As living room is for visitor meeting, seating arrangement should top the list. Seating arrangement will depend on the shape and size of the living room that in turn will decide the shape of sofa. It can be “C” Type seating or could be “L” type also. Prefer always “C” type seating if your space allow you to do so.

Televisions (T.V)
Gone are the days of old television units with showcase. Now we have wall mounted television sets so naturally we shall discuss the same. Viewing distance from T.V should be at least 8 feet, more is better; Size of T.V depends on the size of living room as well as the viewing distance. While designing T.V panel consider full wall. Big panel will make appear your small living room also big. Using wall paper, LED strip light is a good idea. You may also like to use textured panel, MDF jail etc many more materials as per your creativity. Check out photos below.

Shoe Rack
This one is a basic utility item. Place it near main entrance door. Size could be as per requirement. You can make shelves and shutter. You can use louvers in shutter. You can make drawers. If space allows make seating alongside shoe rack to facilitate wearing shoes. There can be storage for umbrella, raincoat, keys etc in this unit. Check photo below.

False ceiling and wall punning
Your plan is ready by deciding on seating arrangement, T.V unit, shoe rack and other storage if any. Now is the time to decide on false ceiling. The purpose of false ceiling is to give you uniform ceiling and to receive electrical fitting like spot light, ceiling fan and led strip lights. Ceiling fan should be positioned at center of seating. Ceiling lights should be positioned to give uniform light in the room. You can also use cove lighting to get indirect light. Gypsum sheet is the commonly used material. You have to be careful while selecting false ceiling contractor. He should have skilled labor. Semi skilled worker will not fill sheet joints properly that will lead to bulge at joints. The tricky part is this bulge is visible only after final paint. At this point of time doing rework is truly time consuming and also waste of money as you will have to re paint your ceiling again. Wall punning is done by gypsum powder to hide adulations in the wall as well as to hide the electrical conduits and finally to get even surface.

You have to prepare electrical layout after you finalize your design of false ceiling. Don’t forget to add speaker wiring also consider light fittings on wall that you are going to use.

Electrical work
Practically while doing work you have to start electrical work when framing of false ceiling is ready.

Color scheme
Color work starts the last but color scheme is the most important thing in interior designing. You have to think about the color combination to be used. Contrast to be given. This includes not only the wall color it will include the furniture color also. You have to decide on kind of color like oil base color or water base color.
